O2 XDA Orbit 2 Joins The Original XDA Orbit On O2 – Business Smart Phones

XDA mobile smart phones are a range of devices offered by the UK network O2 for busy professionals who like to keep in contact with the office whilst out on business. These handsets are literally like taking your office with you, they support some of the highest specification mobile features and technology including WiFi, 3G services, push email and video calling which all help to serve the purpose of keeping the owner in communication when required.

The XDA phone range is not actually manufactured by O2, these devices are made by a communications company called HTC who also supply other mobile networks with their products, each phone and model number are adjusted by each network in a branding exercise which would make the average man on the street believe that the phone were actually produced by the network operators.

As an example, the Orange network renames its HTC device as SPV, and T-Mobile as MDA, the networks then add there own touches to these models such as portal access, 3G and mobile content depending on their individual agreements with third party suppliers, and badge branding, not something that all consumers are keen on.

Orange seem to be the worst for this as they brand just about all of their products with their orange coloured logo, consumers are not always happy with this and so many network badges are removed.

The XDA Orbit smart phone has been available for a little over a year now so it comes as no surprise that O2 have now released an upgraded version, and that it is called the Orbit 2, but this new model offers some far more advanced technology than the previous model including being 3G enabled which facilitates face to face video calling, fast download speeds, new mobile content and acces to online media such as news and sports headlines, weather forecasts, traffic information, downloadable music tracks, video clips and movie trailers.

The XDA Orbit also offers a much more powerful processor for a smoother and easier user experience, the manufacturer has not done away with the central scroll wheel first seen in the original model which is good news as this arrangement makes for quick navigation through the handsets menu system.

A Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional device, the XDA Orbit 2 is powered by a 400Mhz Qualcomm processor and features a 2.8 inch touchscreen with handwriting recognition and TouchFlo finger swipe technology also found in the Apple iPhone along with a full slide out Qwerty keyboard.

With 3G connectivity and HSDPA enabled the XDA Orbit 2 has been fitted with a secondary front mounted camera for video calling in addition to its primary 3.15 mega pixel autofocus camera and video capture & playback.

Other connectivity options include GSM, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth with A2DP support, miniUSB and WiFi capabilities whilst the onboard MP3 Player and FM Radio provide complete entertainment as well as keeping you informed whilst out and about.

The XDA Orbit 2 also comes complete with Pocket Office and Email Client, the O2 XDA Orbit II sports a built-in GPS Receiver with TomTom Mapping.

Overall, the new Orbit 2 is a far more powerful but easier to use device than the original model, the addition of the new technology and features make the phone a real contender against taking both a laptop and a mobile phone with you when leaving the office.

T-Mobile Wing Review

This is the T-Mobile Wing, T-Mobile’s follow up to the MDA. The two devices are similar, however the Wing has a new slicker form factor, as well as a two mega pixel camera, which is an upgrade from last years version. Most importantly this is one of the first devices to launch in the US with Windows Mobile 6, which is professional edition and used to be called Pocket PC. This just means that the T-Mobile Wing has a touch screen.

Like most Windows Mobile phones the Tmobile Wing has tons of buttons. On the front you will find a D-pad with a center select key, soft keys, Windows and ok keys, as well as a send and end key. On the right hand side of the phone, where the camera would normally be there is a stylus, a quick jump to the messaging center, as well as the voice activation button. On the top of the phone you will find the on/off button, which is also used to turn the screen on once it locks. On the left side of the phone you will find the camera button, which makes it very convenient for using the phone as a camera. You will also find the volume control and a microSD slot, which is concealed behind a rubber door. On the bottom of the phone you will find a mini USB jack, which is used for charging, syncing, as well as a headset port.

Finally if you slide the top piece of the phone upwards, the keyboard lies beneath. The nice feature this phone has is the screen comes on as soon as you slide the screen up. The T-Mobile Wing also has some new indicator lights as well, with blue led lights which come on when you press the shift key and the function key.

One of the bad things you will find while holding the T-Mobile Wing with the slider open is that your finger will be positioned right on the camera lens, which will unfortunately leave fingerprints on the lens. You will also notice that the home screen takes quite a long time to come back on. One of the things that T-Mobile has done with the Wing in the interest of making things easier to find is packing the home screen full of different things. They have done this to the point where you can’t touch any part of the screen without activating something. All of these features also slow down the loading time of the T-Mobile Wing.

There are some new note worthy features in Windows Mobile Professional. One of which is the fact that there is a Windows Live application as well as a Live Search application. This can be kind of confusing, seeing you would think they are basically the same thing, however they each give you access to different features. The Windows Live application gives you access to messenger, email, and Windows Live web search. While Windows Live search gives you access to windows local.

Windows Mobile 6 Professional finally added the quick find feature, which has been available on Windows Mobile Smart Phone, the standard for quite some time. Windows Mobile 6 Professional also has all of the office applications that the standard edition has. Finally the battery life in the new T-Mobile Wing is amazing, you can expect to get four days or so on a charge.

We wish the home screen would have had fewer icons making it easier to use, we also wish that they would have upgraded the processor in the T-Mobile Wing over the from the processor that was in the MDA. The processor is just to slow to run Windows Mobile 6 especially with all of the extras T-Mobile added. But other then that its a huge improvement and a really nice phone. If you are considering buying a new phone I would highly recommend purchasing the T-Mobile Wing.

What’s the Big Deal with the T Mobile Sidekick?

So, you want to be like Paris Hilton. You don’t want to follow in her amorous footsteps or even having photographers follow your every move. No, you want her phone! Paris is known world wide for toting a T Mobile Sidekick. Heck, they couldn’t buy such good advertising. But is this phone right for you? Let’s go through the pro’s and the con’s.

Pro’s:

You want to look hip: Well if that’s your only intent stop right here. Go get your Prada bag and overpriced designer jeans and go out there to be stared at. You don’t need advice on what T Mobile phone to get. You can get these phones embedded with crystals and all sorts of fancy stuff. You’ll look so awesome.

You only want to IM and do some light web surfing: The T Mobile Sidekick is really good for using the AOL IM service and for doing some casual web surfing. Read onto the “con’s” if you’re a more serious browser.

You want to use the cool online storage feature: Just don’t get your password stolen like Paris and this is perfectly secure. You can store your contacts online and edit them there. Great if you’re not the type to want to sync up your computer and phone.

You like playing games: When it comes to cell phone games the pickin’s are slim. But this phone is laid out like a PSP. Perfect for the gamer.

Con’s:

You need long battery life: If you’re going to be away from any charging station for a long time get a phone with a small screen, possibly even flip phone. The T Mobile Sidekick isn’t made for long trips through the desert.

You’re a serious business person: No on takes a CEO with a Sidekick seriously. Get a Treo, MDA or Blackberry. This is the one time when a Sidekick is too cool. Also in this topic you aren’t going to be able to sync a Sidekick up with your corporate e-mail. Again, those other phones mentioned earlier are better for this.

You want the best cell phone internet experience: The Sidekick is a bit limited as far as the internet goes. It’s tons better than a typical phone at this but lags way behind a Pocket Windows device. The secret is you’re locked into the pre-installed web browser and can’t upgrade to a better program like Opera.

You’re a nerd: Or just someone who wants to customize your phone. There are tons of great programs out there for the Treo and MDA. You can’t put any of them on a Sidekick. You’re stuck with what comes in the box.

You’re not filthy rich: The T Mobile Sidekick ain’t cheap. And to use it’s features you’ll need a data plan and possibly an unlimited text message plan. This is on top of your T Mobile cell phone plan.

Doesn’t seem like this is the best phone. To be fair the T Mobile Sidekick has lots of great features. It’s very good at being a cool hip phone for the trendy crowd. But if you’re into the technical side, a business user or someone who needs to push their cell phone a little this isn’t the phone for you.

Mobile Phones – Calls Not Common Anymore

It has been found that Britons no longer use their mobile phones simply for calling others whilst they are on the go.

There are increasingly more people who are using their phones to send text messages, take photographs and for searching the internet.

New figures have been released by the Mobile Data Association (MDA) showing that around 1.5 billion text messages were sent each week between January and May in 2008.

The non-profit organisation also said that the figures showed 30 per cent increases in non-call activities every year between May 2007 and May 2008. The company said that this showed how text messaging has really established itself as a powerful social connecting tool that is continuing to have mass appeal to mobile phone users.

The MDA expect to see the text messaging figures rise again in 2008 by another 30 per cent. They believe that this may be partly due to the promotion of all-inclusive tariffs, cheaper mobile phone deals and the introduction of devices that promote messaging applications.

Included in the study were the figures showing the growth of video messaging and also picture messaging. The amount of these multi-media messages sent has risen to more than 10 million messages being sent every week. This, again, shows a year on year growth of 30 per cent.

The MDA confirmed that picture and video messaging are really starting to gain popularity. This is believed to be as a result of the amount of camera enabled mobile phones around and also the improved and automated settings have helped make the process a lot simpler for the phones user. A lot of cheap mobile phones now have the capability to include a camera and therefore many more people have the ability to send these messages.

Mobile internet is still very young and as a result has not seen the same growth spurt that the text messaging forms have seen, but it is still expected to grow by 20 per cent in 2009.

The World’s Greatest Cell-Phone

I just finally figured out how to work my wife’s cell-phone. It’s an MDA that allows us to get our emails and view websites while we travel. It has a small screen and slide-out keyboard with tiny letters. So I need to use the stylus to do the actual inputting. Once we set up our various accounts, we can now see our messages and sort of see the website. That’s because you need to scroll around the page to view it, rather than all at once. It also has a 1.3 megapixel camera, is blue-tooth enabled, and has a word document feature for composing letters and so forth. It’s fairly compact for all those features and probably also bakes bread, takes out the trash and washes the windows, once I get up to speed. In the meantime, I have a 5 year old Motorola cell-phone.

And what does it do? Nothing but answer and send calls. Period. Now my wife loves her phone and all the bells and whistles. I admit it’s nice to be able to check emails, but it took hours to learn some basic functions. My phone doesn’t even come with a Sim card to store addresses and phone contacts. It does have a speaker and can vibrate and I consider that really advanced. Of course, to most of you, that is SO nineties. But I suppose, when I am forced to get a new one, there will be even more features available.

The new iPhone from Apple promises to push the envelope even further. It will be more a computer than phone. Future phones will most likely fax and print as well. So, at what point, do we drop the “phone” name and call it what it is? A communication-data-transmission-storage-entertainment device. After all, it can also play MP3 tunes, will eventually play back movies and have TV access. So “phone” is rather so yesterday, agreed? They are also considering adding GPS capabilities for traveling and tracking and using virtual keyboards that work off lightbeams that you see and touch, without being real. It doesn’t get much more techy than that. Except when they get the whole thing down to the size of a watch.

So, what is the world’s greatest cell-phone? I can described it in one word: simple. How simple? Well, it does only one thing; make calls. It has a push-button keypad, a speaker and receiver. Ideally, it would have a dial tone but I know that’s not possible in a cell-phone. Yet this phone would be virtually unbreakable when dropped and small enough to fit in purses and pockets. And it would be a true phone, not a camera, computer, music player, or PDA. The perfect phone would plug into any outlet to charge without a special cord or adapter. It would come in one color, black, and have just one standard ring tone or a vibrate option.

Sure, people love choices, but not on this one. That’s because it’s also free. What did I just say? Well, remember the old days when people got free phones with their AT&T Bell service? They make enough on the cell service charges so they should toss this basic phone over to us for free. This phone is the exact opposite of where we are heading and it perhaps deserves consideration for that reason. At the very least, give us this option. Make a phone that is only a phone, please. So, T -Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Alltel: are you listening? Can you hear me now?

HTC TyTN II 2, HTC Kaiser or HTC P4550? Three Identities of a PDA Phone

When it comes to naming new models it is a small minefield trying to keep up with HTC, with rumours abound of a new PDA release the forums come alive with speculation on the new models name and every scrap of evidence is present for the general public to make their assumptions.

The new HTC TyTN II (2) is also known as the HTC Kaiser and HTC P4550, so do not be confused, these are all the same model, in fact, as HTC manufacture for the UK networks to rebrand this handset will also be known as the T-Mobile MDA Vario III (3).

HTC are probably better known for their new HTC Touch than the TyTN, the Touch has now been available for some weeks and with the introduction of TouchFlo technology which will later be seen in all manner of mobile devices to include the Apple iPhone the handset caused a big buzz on its release.

The TyTN however has been a big success for HTC and is far more business orientated running on Windows Mobile 5.0 and offering support for Microsoft Pocket Office Editions such as Word, Excel and Internet Explorer it has been a mainstay for many busy professionals.

The new upgraded HTC TyTN II is a powerful mobile office solution with some new features, specifications and a slightly different design.

The integrated camera has been upgraded from a 2.0 to a 3.15 megapixel with flash, zoom and support for video recording and playback and there is a secondary camera installed into the front of the unit to facilitate video calling over 3G so the user can see who they are conversing with in real time.

The operating system has been upgraded to the new Windows Mobile 6.0 offering faster navigation and more features throughout the user experience whilst the internal memory has been boosted from 64MB up to a much larger 128MB which is expandable via MicroSD cards up to 2GB or more, plenty of storage space for new applications, games, music files and video clips.

The overall design has changed a little compared to the original TyTN with a distinct slope down towards the exterior controls underneath the screen and the overall depth of the handset has been shaved down to an impressive 19mm from 22mm. The handset has gained a little weight with the extra technology and features, from 176 to 190g but the length has actually lost 0.5mm and the width has grown by 1mm to 59mm.

The TyTN II offers everything the original model offered including GPRS/HSDPA/EDGE/Bluetooth v2.0, USB connectivity and Quad band functionality, but the most impressive new feature has to be the inclusion of GPS technology.

The HTC TyTN II can be used as a GPS satellite navigation unit for journey planning, route finding, installing locations and adding sites of interest just as you would with a standalone unit.

There are even voice commands to keep you concentrated on driving and not watching the screen.

The new HTC TyTN II is a complete mobile office solution, a powerful PDA phone with todays best mobile technology available at the users fingertips.

LG U990 Viewty additionally Known as LG Viewty Ku990 on 3 Network

Model name recognition can be a big stumbling block for the not so savvy consumer when looking to buy a new mobile phone, especially when researching online.

A good trick that potential customers tend to use is to search for the exact product name or code using a search engine to compare prices from different retailers from the organic results listed, this method is obviously to try and get the very best deal on the new product but what if that product is known by other names? There is then the problem that the consumer is not aware that the product is known by other descriptions and so may not always be getting the best deal.

This applies in particular to mobile phones as rumour websites often use information gained from the body that approves new models which is sometimes changed after the product has been approved, the problem is that the websites publishing this information are then used by bloggers and other interested parties to write their own articles, the model names then circulate and make their way into the public domain where the general public then start to converse about these new models.

When the model then comes to be released the manufacturer then assigns a new model name as do different networks, a typical example of this is a manufacturer called HTC who provide handsets to the UK networks. They had a model called the TyTN that was then renamed as the SPV M3100 by Orange, XDA Trion by O2 and MDA Vario II by T-Mobile so you can see where there may be some confusion.

This has happened again recently with the launch of the new LG KU990, the many different names of this new device are:

LG U990

LG Viewty

LG KU990

LG NYX

All very confusing and all the same mobile phone.

For the purposes of this article I am going to refer to this model as the LG Viewty, it is a new touchscreen operated handset that incorporates a 5.0 megapixel camera, the camera has a zoom function for close up picture taking, a built-in flash unit for poor light conditions and video supports for recording and playing back short video clips.

It is a 3G enabled device which allows for fast download speeds of new mobile content such as ringtones, games, themes and wallpapers as well as streaming video of the latest news headlines, movie trailers and music videos.

There is also a secondary camera which when paired with 3G offers face to face video calling where the caller can actually see and hear the person they are conversing with.

The LG Viewty has a new feature that has not been seen in a mobile phone before, it is full YouTube support, this new service allows users to record video clips on their mobile phone and then add some text before uploading directly to the YouTube website from the handset without the need to plug into a computer.

The advice would be that to get the right price for a new mobile phone is to research the handset thoroughly and find out all of the different model names, search for these names in a search engine and compare the various deals, pop into the local mobile phone shop and ask them how the handset might otherwise be known and again compare prices.

The more research a consumer can do on a product the more likely they are not only to learn more about it but to secure the best price.
